Why We Love Playa del Amor

Also known as Playa del Amor (as translated to Spanish) there is no doubt that this is one of the most popular places to visit in Cabo.

Lovers Beach is not a developed area, meaning no hotels or luxury resorts exist. Think about it as a beautiful beach away from the city, to spend time in nature with friends and family. Tempting, right?

Part cove with two dramatic granite arches being splashed on by rushing waves, and part sandy beach perfect for swimmers and sunbathers alike, there is plenty to do at the West Coast hidden gem.

Well, it is not so hidden to tourists—this is one of Cabo San Lucas’s most popular destinations to visit.

Why It’s Called Lovers Beach

Lovers Beach has a unique added value as it is one of the few seashores in the world where two different seas can meet each other: the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez).

Together with the Divorce Beach (Playa del Divorcio), these two beautiful beaches perfectly depict human love. While Lovers Beach has soft sand and peaceful sea waves at times, Divorce Beach is a rocky shore with impetuous waves that can hurt even the most veteran sailor.

The love story behind

I love history, and I am used to reading about how things started or how things became what they are nowadays, and Lovers Beach is not the exception.

Although the most common reason we locals call Lovers Beach is explained above, some people believe its name has a more dramatic origin. This Shakespeare-styled love tale about this place has been shared for generations among the first locals.

It started in the XVII when a Japanese sailor arrived at the beach as a castaway. He was rescued by a beautiful Mexican woman, who helped him recover from the accident, and soon after, they fell in love.

The rumors of them running away together got to her father’s ears, and in a desperate attempt to stop them, he killed the tragic-fated foreigner.

As her beloved sailor man was forever gone, she decided to walk to the sea to find him and disappeared into the deep blue ocean.

Where Is Lovers Beach Located?

This beach is located in Cabo San Lucas, one of the most touristic cities in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Its exact location is right at the bottom of the Baja Península and is a hidden cove with access to both coastal sides of the land space.

How To Get There

Since this is a remote area and it’s not connected to downtown in Cabo, the best way to get to Lovers Beach is by water taxi. You can take one from Medano Beach.

Also, you can choose to rent a kayak or paddleboard if you prefer, but if you feel more adventurous, you can try to hike the rocks from Mt. Solmar and get through Divorce Beach. But just to let you know, it is not for fitness amateurs!

If you are near downtown Cabo, you can walk to the marina and hire a glass-bottomed boat so you can get a preview of what you may see if you are up to snorkeling. Spoiler alert, we know there is extraordinary marine life there!

Once you leave the marina in Cabo, your captain will point out the best diving spots in the area and show you where the Sea of Cortez meets with the Pacific Ocean. Cool, right?

What to do in Lovers Beach

Accessible mainly by boat, you will find plenty of Lovers Beach excursion opportunities, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and sunset cruises filled with wine and good music. Just take a little look below.

Snorkeling

This is one of the top activities you can do while spending the day at Lovers Beach. There is much marine life worthy of the best waterproof camera you can get.

Scuba diving

If you want a more profound experience, you might find scuba diving right for you.

Near Lovers Beach is Neptune’s Finger rock formation (or Dedo de Neptuno), and underneath this area, there is a submarine canyon at least 1000 meters deep.

This incredible submarine landscape creates a fantastic sand downfall effect which seems like an underwater waterfall. You can witness such a majestic place only 30 meters down.

Kayaking or Paddleboarding

If you want an excuse to exercise, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard and row your way to the beach. For some people, this is a beautiful way of enjoying the calming atmosphere only sea waves can give—be careful not to go too close to the rock structures.

This is a fantastic alternative if you are traveling with children and want to keep them amused along the way. This is an inviting activity to explore the underwater landscape, even for any adult.

Sailboats and sunset cruises

For a more romantic Lover’s Beach excursion, you can go on a luxury sailboat that will take you around the cove.

This helps you avoid the crowds on the beach and have a more intimate day with your partner.

There are also 2-hour sunset cruises, in which many offer light plates and premium drinks so you can share a toast to a great vacation.

Our Advice Before Your Trip To Lovers Beach

To our dear Baja travelers, we would like to share a special list of things you should be considerate before you go to Lovers Beach:

  • Plan ahead, so you get there early enough to secure transportation and a great spot on the beach. That’s right, you snooze, you lose!
  • Lovers Beach is best done as an entire day trip, so you should plan about six hours in the area and coordinate with your water taxi or tour guide.
  • Depending on your booked trip, you might need to bring lunch and, indeed, a lot of water since, as you can expect, there won’t be concessions on the actual beach.
  • Any visitor must bring high-quality sunscreen and sun protection clothing before heading out on this adventure. Bear in mind that from 11:00 to 16:00, prolonged sun exposure can cause severe skin damage.
  • Bring beach shoes, as the sand is quite hot, and you can burn your feet as soon as you touch the ground.

  • If you are spending your day just on the beach, it would probably be safer for you to stay on the warm sand than to head into the waters—this cove is known for strong waves and winds, and you wouldn’t want a tragedy to ruin your day.

If you want to go swimming, head to the side of the beach that leads to the Sea of Cortez, which is much safer for swimming and snorkeling.

Enjoy Lovers Beach With Friends And Family

We like to say that holidays in Cabo San Lucas are already guaranteed to be a magical experience, bringing you beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
