If you prefer to not haggle with vendors on the beach (although many people enjoy this), there are golden opportunities for shopping in La Paz and of course all of BCS. Here are just a few that I have discovered – several through their fabulously managed social media sites.
Shopping in La Paz Mexico
Anaquel Concept Store & Garden This is a multi brand boutique where they support local entrepreneurs. I started out following their Instagram account and was drawn to visit in person. A lovely store, run by a friendly welcoming woman. She speaks English, which was very helpful as I am learning Spanish and am at a beginner level. This shop holds a variety of items, including jewelry, purses/bags, pet items, cosmetics, and clothing (some beautiful vintage!). Her prices seem great and all her products are made in Mexico, a majority in La Paz.
Espacio Allende This was such a happy accident! I was looking for a specific place, and this was next door. A collaborative store, eight women are partners and share the day to day duties of running the shop where their wares are displayed. They have second hand clothing and books, as well as natural cosmetics, jewelry, handmade notebooks, children’s decor, and teaching toys. They have many clever and unique items – not to mention their prime location on Allende, a few blocks up from the malecon – don’t miss this one!
Vogart Another fantastic find from social media, I have been shopping at this “concept” store since we arrived. It is my “go-to” for gifts to take/send back to the US. They offer clothing, art, accessories, jewelry, pottery/dishware, personal care items as well as an art gallery. The art gallery part of the store also now houses a coffee shop (Patagonia). All that they sell is made in Mexico and I have purchased many unusual treasures as well as lovely clothing.
Artesanias La Antigua California When we host visitors and they are interested in shopping for souvenirs, this is our first stop. They are located a block up from the Malecon in a more “touristy” area, but we find their selection amazing and prices decent. The store is packed with the usual t-shirts, mugs, shot glasses, etc. but is also home to wonderful art, dishes, blankets, mirrors, and so much more. We shopped extensively when we were looking for mirrors for our home and came back to this spot to purchase.
If you venture to Los Barriles, don’t miss El Toro La Luna. This store is filled with a huge variety of home decor items, from ornaments to furniture.
Pottery Shops in Baja California Sur
Can we talk about pottery? So many options to explore throughout all of Baja California South!
A trip to La Paz will not be complete without a visit to Ibarra’s Pottery. This is a family owned business and a La Paz staple for more than 60 years. You will likely see the mother and daughter team hand painting various pottery items while you visit. They also stock other traditional gift store items. We love their Katrina tiles!
Quinta Lupita is the shop where we purchased all our tile and a sink for an addition we built. Excellent prices, quality, and service. It is a small shop filled with many gorgeous items.
If you feel like a road trip to La Ventana (and you really should!) you must stop at Artesanias La Ventana Del Mundo. This shop is located on the left in La Ventana and is easy to miss as you are driving through. I have found overall that the prices in La Ventana are high, but not at this store. Beautiful, unusual pottery with very good prices. During the “high” season, there is a store across the road that has fun clothing, gift items and glassware – also with good prices.
If you are talking about pottery shopping in BCS, Artensanos in Cabo San Lucas will definitely be recommended. This is a HUGE store (think multi-level warehouse) with everything pottery/glassware/home decor you can imagine, including furniture. Good pricing with an absolutely amazing selection.
Please keep in mind when planning your shopping excursion that some stores close at 2 pm (Ibarras and Artesanos) and that some are cash only (cash is ALWAYS preferred). All the stores listed here have their items priced and therefore it is not typical to haggle. They should be easy to find via google maps, but beware that the hours listed may not be accurate. If you tell them you are traveling, shops will take extra care in packaging your purchases. Happy Shopping in La Paz Mexico and BCS!
